The Shire finally has its own swing scene

The Shire finally has its own swing scene

[Hero looping video]

A free Lindy Hop night in Oyster Bay on Monday 19th October, then six Monday classes in Como and a dance party. No partner, no experience, flat shoes.

Oyster Bay Community Hall – 7pm – sixteen places in the course that follows

The nearest swing class is in Newton. 45 minutes each way. This one is in the next suburb.

Oyster Bay Community Hall has a proper sprung floor. It’s what a real dance venue has and a school hall doesn’t. Your knees will notice.

The same sixteen people
Not a drop-in class. Same room, same group, six weeks – which is why you’ll actually be able to dance at the end of it.

It ends with a real dance
On Saturday 5th December you’ll be out on the floor at a proper swing night. Included, not an upsell.

What happens on Monday 19th October?

7:00Doors open. Someone takes your name at the table by the door.
7:10Twenty minutes of teaching. Everybody learns the same basic step. You’ll have it inside ten minutes.
7:30The champions dance. Three minutes, full speed. Worth the trip on its own.
7:35Twenty minutes more, building on what you just watched.
8:00Social dancing. Partners rotate, sit one out whenever you like, nobody has to perform.
8:45Home

Come on your own if you like – most people do, and you’ll know six names by eight o’clock

Then six Mondays in Como

Six weeks in a small studio in Como (with sprung floor). Same room, same people, starting from absolutely nothing.

From 26th October, then 2, 19, 16, 23 and 30th November. Teaching from 7pm to 8pm, try it out afterwards.

Prices – $105. $85 if you book on launch night or before Friday 23 October. $145 for two people (lead & follow) together.

Sixteen places. That is not a marketing number – it’s the size of the studio, and when it’s full it’s full.

And the, on 5 December, you go dancing

Saturday 5 December, back at Oyster Bay Community Hall. Dancers come down from across Sydney, the floor fills up, and after six weeks you’re out on it rather than watching from the side. Your place is included in the course.

Not doing the course? Tickets $25 on the door. Everyone’s welcome.

Questions people are actually asking…

Do I need a partner? No. Partners rotate all night and you’ll dance with everyone in the room.
Do I need any experience?None. The whole night is built for people who have never done this before.
What do I wear? What you’d wear to the pub, and flat shoes you can turn in. No costumes.
Can I come on my own?Yes, and most people do.
How old is everyone? All ages. It’s a social dance, not a young person’s sport.
Do I have to perform?Never. Nobody is watching anybody.
Is there parking?Yes, out the front of the hall and on the streets around it.
What does it cost? The 19 October night is free. The six-week course is $105, or $85 booked early.
What if I can’t make 19 October?Join the list at the bottom and you’ll hear when February opens.

Who’s Teaching?

[Brian]

I’m Brian. I’ve been dancing Lindy Hop for fifteen years, I live Como, and I got tired of driving forty-five minutes to do it. So I’m starting something here.

Where?

Launch Night

[Map Oyster Bay]

Oyster Bay Community Hall, 117 Como Rd, Oyster Bay, NSW 2225

Parking out front. Oyster Bay isn’t walkable from a station. Driving is easy, public transport isn’t — Como and Jannali are the closest stations if someone can pick you up.

The Course

[Map Como]

Shire Swing Society, 50 Girraween Ave, Como, NSW 2226

Parking out front. Studio at the rear of the property. Ten minute’s walk from Como Station.

Can’t make October? February’s course opens in the new year — leave your email and you’ll hear about it first.
